We arrived mid to late January, the cheapest time to visit NY. Our room rate was reflective of the season, therefore my 4 star review. Had we paid several hundred dollars more for the room, the score would have been much lower. Evidently I’m all about the value, and this was a great value. We had a corner suite (just like the one pictured on their TA page). Large living room and separate bedroom, small bath. The hotel is older, not modern at all but that was the charm for me. As others have mentioned the public rooms are lovely with old world character. We liked the bar area for its warm and inviting nature, nice comfy seats. The food was average, and the service was good. We arrived late afternoon and I was so impressed with the room (less than $200 a night, a far cry from the $400 a night we paid a few years earlier for a very modern but very tiny room during the high Christmas season at a “boutique” hotel). Husband wanted a cup of coffee and the little kitchen area had the coffee maker, but no coffee. So he went into the hall way and asked one of the maids. She rang housekeeping who said they would deliver some. But it never happened that night. That evening we realized the TV in the living room did not work. A call to maintenance and within a few hours a part was replaced and it was fixed. Better TV repair than coffee service. We were out of the room early the next morning so I left a large note for the maid, asking for coffee. When we arrived back to our room after 4pm, there was no coffee. Tried calling housekeeping, but there was no answer. Upon a closer look, found out the room had not been serviced at all that day, which was the reason for no coffee. After a return from dinner we wanted to turn on the heat. The temps were dropping and single digit temps were forecast for the next day. But the heater in the living room would not come on. At this point, a little more force was needed so I made a trip down to the front desk and let them know about the coffee, no maid service and no heat. Again maintenance was pretty quick to show up, but the heater could not be fixed. However, one of the radiators did work (we are from CA where we don’t have radiators and I never even thought to try those). The next day we had problems with the heater in the bedroom not shutting off, so we had to open the window. Old hotel, things like this happen. Oh, and that night they finally did bring is some coffee. The next night we were kept awake with a toilet that kept running. Two different calls on two different days to maintenance were never answered. So we either had to listen to the toilet run, or take the tank lid off and try to reseat the flapper, which was only successful about 50% of the time. WiFi was supposed to be included in the additional resort fee, but one day we got an alert on our phone for an unexplained hotel charge. I called the front desk and was told that it appeared we had not been charged the daily resort fee, so I was getting a better deal because WiFi was cheaper than the daily fee. Sounded fine with me. Thankfully no other issues with the room, other than the fact that it could seriously take more than 5 minutes of full blast running the shower, tub or sink before getting warm water and maybe even 10 minutes or more before it was hot. Based on the room we got for the price paid, all these little issues were merely annoyances. Had we paid high season prices, my review might have been much lower. Would we return? If the price was right, you bet. Otherwise, no.

"Ideal situation and very helpful staff"

We stayed here for 3 nights as part of a package and were very happy with the location (not too far from Grand Central Station). The hotel is very grand in the lobby/ foyer but the rooms are a little more jaded - at least on the 15th floor where we were. However, the room and (sizeable) bathroom were very clean and the bathroom was stocked with shower gel etc, which was replaced each day. There was also a hairdryer. Although we were opposite the lifts, there was no noise from inside the hotel to disturb us. The bed was large and very comfortable. We had one or two issues with the room (eg safe would not function properly), but after we had phoned guest services, they sent someone up to fix it almost straightaway. We found all the staff here to be pleasant, courteous and cheerful in their attitude. We had the full breakfast, which at $26 pp was plentiful and not over priced for a city centre. This price included unlimited top ups of juice and tea/coffee, which some of the other breakfast menu options did not. We left very early for an onward flight and the doorman was very helpful in organising a taxi in advance for us. Taxi was reliable and there waiting for us at 4 am (!) as arranged. The only issue we had was that a local had tried to leave us a message to arrange a meeting and had terrible trouble getting through. He was left uncertain as to whether we would get the message. We did receive the message on the phone but also had 2 printed messages pushed under our door 24 hours after the event!! Maybe a cautionary tale, but it worked out OK for us as we managed to meet up ok.
