"Total Waste"
March, 2018
We were on a six day vacation and this day was totally wasted. There were no whales at all. They offered a rain check, but with only two days remaining, why waste a second day. They gave no advance notice that they had discontinued acceptance of American Express. No whales, no American Express, no food, no drinks, no picture, just a total ripoff and waste of time.

We had a great experience through the entire process of registering through Trip Advisor until we were leaving the boat! We had very comfortable, on-time, luxury bus transportation to and from where the ship was docked within a 1 block walk of our downtown hotel. While on the cruise we were fortunate to see many, many whales and got several great pictures of them. We even saw one pod of dolphins! The buffet was well organized and plentiful and the food was wonderful. We learned a lot about whale biology and there was some great interactive demonstrations for kids. The staff was very helpful and always smiling. There was only one thing that took my by surprise, and that was the gratuity. I had set aside the usual 20% of the price paid for the tour to drop in the tip box on the way off the ship, only to find out there wasn't one. Tipping has to be done individually. Special shout out to the photographer, too. Our souvenir photo turned out beautifully and it is one of my favorite mementos of our trip to Honolulu. We had a great experience and a good time and we would recommend this tour.

"The early-bird whale watching was fantastic - great info from the naturalist on board."

My husband and I went on the early-bird whale watching cruise. We were assured several times before we embarked that if we didn't see any whales, we'd receive a coupon for a free return visit -- this made us assume that we may not see any this time! However, we were treated to an amazing view of a humpback mom and baby. There was a naturalist on board who provided ongoing commentary and information about humpback whales. We were able to get close to the whales, but not too close. Once the boat was relatively near the mom and baby, the boat just stopped and we stayed there to watch them. Overall, the operation seemed to be very respective of the whales. I'd definitely recommend the Star of Honolulu if you're thinking about going whale-watching.

"Check their website before booking with trip advisor"

I haven’t even gone on the cruise yet, but I went to the Star of Honolulu’s website to check arrival time and found that kids are supposed to get free admission when accompanied by an adult. trip advisor didn’t advise me of this and overcharged me by $48 US. I thought web services like trip advisor are supposed to get you a deal and save you from having to do much research. Otherwise, what’s the point? The crappy customer service?

We had a great evening on the Star of Honolulu for our 5 year anniversary. Check-in was quick and easy at Aloha Tower right next to the boat. The entire staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. The food tasted great (beef tenderloin and a whole lobster!) with unlimited fruit, cheese and crackers. We were treated to a free glass of non-alcoholic champagne upon seating and the two free premium drinks. The entertainment was fairly good but the views of Waikiki and the sunset were the real treat. We even snuck a quick view of a couple of whales.

My wife and I were having a wonderful time. Dinner was great, the servers were friendly and the ambiance was welcoming. Towards the end of the night the musicians began to play and we danced and were still having a great time. As we were chatting with the table next to us, the Maitre D came to our table and basically told us to shut up. First, we were not being obnoxious, second, we were not the only table talking, yet we were singled out. We later found out the pianist was the one who complained, not a guest, the pianist. This was a dinner cruise, people talk, it was not a private concert for him to shush us. This was rude, and for the money we paid for this dinner cruise, was totally un acceptable. If the pianist wants an attentive crowd he could either play better or find a different venue to play for. Either way, you do not treat paying customers that way.
