"Best Beach and Hotel on the Island"
TripAdvisor user rating 5 out of 5
Reviewed March 20, 2019 NEW
The Mauna Kea exceeded our expectations. This property has the best beach and amenities on the island. The snorkeling is amazing; I saw an array of fish and a manta ray while snorkeling along the rocks. We enjoyed the delicious breakfast buffet at the Manta restaurant which offered fresh-squeezed juices and an omelet bar. The rooms are overly spacious with a comfortable bed and have large bathtubs to soak and relax. The property is embedded in lush manicured gardens that give the property the Hawaiian tropical resort feel. The first four nights of our stay we stayed at the Hilton Waikoloa Village and it was night and day. We were excited to change properties and leave the mass crowds of the Hilton and enjoy a property with an actual beach and better accommodations. We highly recommend the Mauna Kea and we will be back!

"Beautiful beach and fun activities - great family hotel"

Had a great time at this hotel with the family. Clean, friendly staff and good food. The beach is perfect for snorkeling on our own. They had a really yummy breakfast buffet. We got a suite upgrade and stayed in a room with beach access and was perfect for us. They also have a table tennis and pool table to take a break from the water. They have some really nice shopping options as well. They had a few options for vegetarians at the Hau Tree beach restaurant. We would like to see them expand on the vegetarian options for dinner.

"great service by the entire staff"

my wife and I recently had a wonderful week at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel...what a fabulous experience from start to finish...beginning to end. We were particularly impressed with the concierge support-particularly Amy Joy Matsen. Wow, talk about above and beyond assistance, help in ways one would never expect. The entire staff-from restaurant servers, to bell service to beach helpers to room cleaning to making reservations-kudos to Terry Andrade. Bottom line: can't wait to return!

"Amazing Resort. Stay here!!"
TripAdvisor user rating 5 out of 5

This property is as good as it gets, look no further if you’re going to the Big Island. We used a Marriott Suite Upgrade to get a Premier Oceanfront Deluxe room in the Main Tower. The room and views were amazing and the huge shower looking out over the bay was incredible. The beach is the best on the island with soft sand that extends out as far as you can touch in the ocean. We rented paddle boards right from the hotel and cruises around the bay. The snorkeling was also good on both sides near the rocks. Breakfast buffet was great and has outside seating with beautiful views of the ocean.

"A Great Place to Unwind"
TripAdvisor user rating 5 out of 5
Reviewed March 08, 2019 NEW
We stayed at the Mauna Kea for five nights in early March. In the previous three weeks we had been touring and cruising in Australia and New Zealand. Friends had stayed at the MK before and recommended the property as an ideal place to unwind. A direct, non-stop to DFW from The Big Island is a plus. We enjoyed our stay and made the most of it, seeing as much of the island as possible and utilizing the MK in the process. Our room was comfortable and the restaurants more than adequate. Our dining choices changed daily throughout the property, depending upon our mood. We spent time by the pool and went to the luau which is advertised as the best on the island. I no longer play golf, but understand that a golf vacation based at the MK works well. We didn’t take advantage of the reciprocal dining options at the Westin, but that’s an attractive component as well. We rented a car two days at the hotel and, thanks to the ladies in the concierge, found our way around the island very well. High points were the chocolate farm, the Botanical Gardens and the helicopter rides over the island, including the volcanos. And the whale watch catamaran ride. And certainly the property is beautiful. We did go to the beach one day and hiked down the shore and past the Westin before the trail was no longer marked (my only criticism) and we got lost. All that having been said, we’ll likely return.
