"Perfect spot for a babymoon"
TripAdvisor user rating 5 out of 5
Reviewed March 21, 2019 NEW
My wife and I travelled to Kauai and Koa Kea hotel for our babymoon and it was absolutely perfect. Relaxed environment with great great service that was not pushy or intrusive but available, responsive and helpful. The hotel was clean, well maintained, and in a perfect location. The restaurant was great and there were also great options for dining off premises both for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Would definitely recommend the two nearest shopping centers for breakfasts, lunches and dinners plus finding a hawaii shirt. There is even a little grocery store to pick up some snacks if you wanted them. Valet service for the car was dependable, fast and friendly as was the service around the pool during the day. The views are really unwinding and there's a lovely little beach to go into the ocean. While we didn't surf, there were plenty of beginners taking to the waves which we might well have done under other circumstances. There were a number of other couples clearly on a babymoon as well and the rest of the clientele during our stay were respecting of the property and other people. A 5 star experience and we would definitely love to go back and recommend to all our friends and others.

"Good, but not as great as I would expect for price and other ratings"

Overall I had a nice stay at this hotel. Pros: #1. The amazing location. #2. Always lots of comfortable chairs available to sit on to enjoy the ocean view. #3. Quiet and perfect for adults. #4. Some nice amenities such as the Fresh toiletries in room, free yoga classes in front of the ocean, spa services offered by the ocean. Cons. #1 -The hotel itself isn't worthy of being called a top resort/4-star. As many reviews said, it is basically a well-appointed motel. The rooms are dark and small. The balconies have zero privacy because all that separates them from the next room is a 1 inch partition. The air conditioning is awful. It's like a jet engine going off in your room. We kept it set for a very high (hot) temperature so we didn't have to hear it running. #2 -the breakfast buffet wasn't restocked, so often there were a couple of pieces of soggy fruit and 2 yogurt cups, and cereal boxes. #3 -front desk wasn't overly helpful. Most of the time that I went to ask a question, I felt like I was intruding or bothering them. #4 -careful of the bill. Because of the various "credits", it is extremely confusing and I found I was charged much more than I should have been. My $20 daily breakfast credit was only allocated for 2 days instead of 6. My 10% spa discount wasn't given to me at all. And my $50 food and beverage credit was also not applied. The front desk said they'd handle it and email me my corrected bill within minutes. It's 24 hours later, and I have yet to receive a bill.

"Nice, but overrated"

This hotel is oceanfront, but no beach is east to get to. Nice pool. Room was nice, great bathroom. We faced out the side with an ocean view from our porch. It was quiet which I imagine the rooms facing the pool are not. Service was superb, from front desk to at valets Food was mixed. Good at the pool, very good but overpriced at the main restaurant, and uneven at breakfast A nice hotel but have no idea how it became number one in Hawaii

My husband and I spent a long weekend here while we were in Maui for two weeks. Loved the low key vibe of this resort and Kauai in general. We can’t wait to come back! Great rooms with a view, food was amazing and hospitality top notch.

"We love this luxury but boutique hotel. Virtually flawless."

We came here on our honeymoon in August 2017 and came back again this month since we couldn't get back in 2018 for our first anniversary. We really really love the Koa Kea. Check-in is fast and efficient and we kept returning to Shayla for assistance throughout our stay since she was so helpful. The valet guys are friendly and very helpful as well, with special mentions to Daniel, Alex and Mike for the tips on places to check out and for remembering our car and what we've been up to on our trip. It makes a big difference when we mention we are doing an ATV trip and the next day, Daniel asks us about it. These staff are really great at their jobs and add to the special touches we love about the hotel where you feel like a 'somebody' rather than a faceless wallet at a big-brand resort. The hotel itself is spotless and the cleaning staff are friendly, efficient and thorough. Turn-down service is incredible here because they also do a quick clean up with turn down service so you never feel like you have to ask for more towels if you shower in the morning and again before dinner after a day of hiking or being in the ocean. They also turn on some music which is so lovely to come back from dinner and have some tunes playing and you get a lovely local chocolate. Everyone is so well trained here and the staff are polite, friendly and professional. The bed is super comfy (softer mattress, which actually works really well for my bad back since I sleep on my side) and the pillows are good. The marble shower and spotless bathroom is also one of my favourite hotel bathrooms ever! Also, PLEASE keep stocking Fresh shampoo, conditioner, body wash and lotion! Fresh's products are heavenly and I actually use them at home so it's so amazing and luxurious to have them on hand when we come to the hotel! We did have a bit of an annoying issue with our toilet running through the night on this trip in room 167, but it was ultimately dealt with professionally by the team and even though we lost two nights' sleep, we were glad the issue was resolved and the Koa Kea staff made a concerted effort to make things right. Red Salt, the on-site higher end restaurant is delicious. Jessica B was an incredible server (we loved chatting with her and learning about her experiences and the island during dinner!) and the octopus appetizer, furikake-crusted ahi and the lobster gnocchi are all divine! The pool bar food is also genuinely good! We love the fish tacos, the hurricane fries and my husband was a huge fan of the house burger which they will cook to a nice medium. Another small but important detail worth mentioning is that I love the pool chairs / sunbeds here. They are very padded, soft and comfy and it makes it so nice to spend time actually relaxing here after hiking or doing an activity in the morning (for comparison, at the Princeville Resort, the pool chairs were so uncomfortable you could barely relax in them for more than an hour before they dig into your back!). The white towels that attach to the chairs for hygiene here are a nice touch and don't blow away in the Kauai wind. I'm a clean freak and this is one of the few hotels where I feel like everything is always hygienic and spotless. The drinks are priced a bit high for what you get. If management knocked the price down by a few dollars per drink ($14 rather than $17, for example) I think we would have been more inclined to drink more often at the hotel bar rather than elsewhere. But the frozen coconut mojito is a treat and so refreshing! Lastly, other little touches that are very much appreciated include the free refreshing fruit juice in the lobby after a big hike or excursion, the complimentary sunset mai tais and midday smoothie samples that are handed out poolside and are always a nice little surprise, how helpful the front desk team was in booking activities and excursions and offering honest feedback on them, the absolutely perfect refreshing-but-not-cold temperature of the pool, the fact that there is prescription and non-prescription snorkelling masks available for rent with Pedro, the little bonfire pits where you can chat with other guests, the complimentary branded flip-flops in the hotel room, easy access to on-site laundry, the fact that the valet parking is included in the resort fee, that you are steps away from a stunning beach that is never densely populated (Kiahuna beach) and the overall perfect luxury boutique vibe at this hotel. Already dreaming about coming back!
