I went hang gliding at wallaby ranch with a group of family and friends on my 40th birthday and it was THE BEST birthday ever!!! I had never been hang gliding before so I had limited expectation, but the owner and crew were fun, inviting, very safe, and exceptional! I highly recommend it to everyone (except those afraid of heights) young and old!!!!!

A friend told me about the Wallaby Ranch vsince he knew I was interested in all forms of flight. On my first visit, I drove onto the property finding it very quiet and serene, but not noting any activity. Parking and walking about to take in the scene, we finally encountered some nice folks out enjoying the sunny afternoon. Asking when we could observe someone hang gliding, they all pointed upward. To our surprise, there were six people aloft soaring the currents and updrafts. What fun to watch. And I understand one can also take a dual ride aloft.

We enjoyed flying with Malcolm and Brett. Everything was well organized and equipment in top shape. The flying was wonderful with a nice opportunity to take the controls and really enjoy flight. Wallaby Ranch is friendly and serves a nice breakfast after the morning flights. It was the best part of our Orlando vacation

I have been flying at Wallaby Ranch frequently since moving to Central Florida 3 years ago. I wasn't entirely sure I would like hang gliding, but on my first ride up -- seeing the landing field shrink below me, hearing nothing but wind in my ears after we got off tow, feeling how easy and intuitive it is to steer the hang glider in flight -- I was hooked. I later went for a ride with Oliver in a trike (a motorized, 2-seater hang glider), where we got up to about 5000' and got to see an elephant sanctuary(!), Lake Kissimee, Winter Haven, Epcot Center, and more. It was awesome! After the flight, a delicious, relaxed breakfast buffet was served, and I hung out hearing hang gliding stories and meeting the crew and visitors, lounging in the shade on swings and Adirondack chairs. I learned to fly solo at Wallaby Ranch, and I cannot imagine a better place to learn. Malcolm Jones, the owner, holds safety as his highest priority. He is always present at launch, making sure conditions stay safe for each pilot's abilities, watching how students progress, and having fun taking visitors for rides. The staff at Wallaby will make sure that you know what you need to, and will teach you to err on the side of caution when it comes to judgment in aviation. The Ranch is a great place to visit, and a wonderful place to call one of my homes.

Frequently Asked Questions about Tandem Hang Gliding Flights

How long are the flights?
Flight times vary based on the flight you have chosen. Flight times are as follows:

  • Discovery Flight: 15 minutes
  • The Mile High Flight: 21 minutes
  • The Supreme Flight: 40 minutes

How high do we go?
Flight altitudes also range by flight type.
  • Discovery Flight: 3,500 feet in the air
  • The Mile High Flight: 5,280 feet in the air
  • The Supreme Flight: 10,000 feet in the air

Is there an age restriction?
Yes. You must be at least 18 years old in order to fly.

Is there a weight limit?
Yes. You must weigh under 240 lbs. to fly.

What should I wear?
Because of the altitudes you will be flying at, it is recommended that you wear close-toed shoes and socks. Long pants and a light jacket or sweatshirt are advised if you get cold easily.

When is the best time to fly?
We fly anytime the weather allows us to fly. The best conditions for flying are in smooth air and calm winds, generally in the early morning or late in the afternoon.

What is a self-launching hang glider?
Also called a ‘trike’, it is an FAA-certified Light Sport Aircraft that features a hang gliding wing and weight shift operation. It flies much like a traditional hang glider, but is powered by a reliable aircraft engine.

Trikes provide the experience of traditional hang gliding, but are more capable of flying safely in a wider range of weather conditions. Trikes also have other advantages in comfort (big, cushy seats) and safety (BMW-engineered steel safety cage), and they enable longer airtime.

How safe is powered hang gliding?
We have a 100% safety record and our trikes are incredibly strong. For your safety and peace of mind, our trikes are furthermore outfitted with a ballistic parachute system. But most importantly, we simply don’t fly in marginal conditions. After all, it’s all about having fun!

What happens if the engine quits?
A trike is a powered hang glider, designed for flight with or without power. At Hang Glide Orlando, the engine is only used to climb to altitude. Then we turn off the engine and silently glide back down to earth.

Is the engine loud?
The engine is a Rotax 912, 4 stroke engine with silencer kit designed for noise reduction. In addition to the sound reduction features, you will also be wearing an intercom headset which not only allows you clear in-flight communication but also reduces outside sound.
