"Fantastic stay!"

Staff was terrific for our entire stay, friendly and courteous. The Hotel itself was clean and comfortable. On site restaurant and lounge was a bonus and on site luau was a treat. The view from our lanai was incredible, the ocean is literally right there. The coconut market place was within walking distance, full of shopping and we found ourselves there daily. The only downfall was the beach. With the rock shelf you couldn’t do any water activities right there. The hotel offered bean bag toss and lawn pong. I would definitely stay here again.

"Not a Resort"

We stayed here one night after coming in on a late flight and needing a place to stay before going up north to the Resort we were going to be staying at. It served it purpose, but I would never book this for more than one night. The rooms are aged and judging it against other Courtyards it’s below average. If it’s the only place that fits your budget or its as far as your Marriott points will take you then pull the trigger just to get you to Hawaii, but don’t plan on hanging around the property as a Resort.

“Meh” defines this hotel. It’s a nestled at the end of Alii Street which means there is a constant flow of cars and trucks around the corner. That means noise and congestion. The hotel is date—the rooms are small and worn. I’m hoping the internet will stay up long enough for this post to be uploaded—we are on the upgraded plan but the wifi sucks. Check-in was typical for a 2-star hotel. The process took a long time, the desk clerk’s attempts to help us were leading to a room downgrade, and it felt like the manager who came to help was just trying to brush us off by telling us they were 100% full. That’s not what the desk clerk told us as she was offering choices of different rooms. Our room is partial ocean view. Anyone who’s been to an ocean resort knows what that means—but at the King MehMeh it means a full view of the WalMart store up the hill. Last time we stayed at this hotel we had a nice room—this one is probably the worst hotel room we’ve ever had in 13 trips to Hawaii. I wouldn’t recommend staying here unless you have a quick layover and need to grab dinner, sleep and head straight to the airport. Otherwise you’ll find something less than the typical Marriott experience in Hawaii. Check-in was typical for a 2-star hotel. And, the desk clerk told us (properly) that the room had a view of the city where the manager said it was partial ocean. If you can’t trust the people running the hotel.... Quality room with balcony. Maid service excellent. Two 6 story towers. Large parking lot ($20 fee daily). Only hotel with beach in Kona. Big Island has fewer sandy beaches, but they are easy to find. Nicely appointed lobby is across street from lots of restaurants and tourist shops. Only need rental car to access other beaches and Volcano National Park (90 miles). Tennis courts. Twice weekly luau on site. Outdoor pool, beach cabanas and onset restaurants.

"Good, a few changes would make it great"

The good: Location! Swimming Lagoon! Pool/Bar on the beach! However, the pool and beach was lacking in chaise lounges and shade/umbrellas. I wanted to lay out in the shade and read a book, and there just wasn't a place to do this at the pool or on the beach. I think next time, I will go to target and get a cheap beach chair and umbrella.
